The Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation was established in November 1997 to promote and fund medical, healthcare and biomedical research in Tasmania.

The Research Foundation is a not-for profit independent organisation run by a volunteer Board that receives no direct financial support from Government. Funding comes from donations, corporate sponsorships, bequests and a variety of fundraising activities and events.

The Research Foundation is recognised as an Approved Research Institute by the National Health & Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) and the Australian Taxation Office. Donations of $2 and more to the Foundation are tax deductible.

The Foundation funds research into cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Parkinsons, Multiple Sclerosis and many other conditions. Many of the diseases and conditions studied by our researchers are more prevalent in Tasmania than anywhere else in the world.

Medical breakthroughs can and will happen if the research projects are well supported and adequately funded.

Our Mission

To encourage and advance investigation into the cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease.

To involve the medical, healthcare and scientific fraternities, the media, the community, businesses and governments in debate, discussion, sponsorship and support and use the input and goodwill to develop and maintain an active research program in Tasmania.

To provide encouragement and support to young researchers and investigators.

To provide sufficient funds to support an international standard of medical and biomedical research that will continue to attract quality people to work at the Hospital and the University's Medical School.

Where to find us

The offices of the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation are located in "C" Block on the Ground Flood of the Royal Hobart Hospital, 48 Liverpool Street, Hobart. The office is managed by an Executive Director and an Administrative Manager.

Since its formation in late 1997, the RHH Research Foundation has allocated nearly $2 million to more than 90 local research projects. It is the aim of the Board of Managment of the Foundation to increase the level of funding for research to $300,000 or more a year.

The Foundation also funds three full-time research fellows investigating in the areas of Parkinson's disease and Cystic Fibrosis.

Find out how you can help

The Royal Hobart Hospital Research Advisory Committee works closely with the RHH Research Foundation Inc. Each year the RHH Research Foundation determines the total amount of money that can be allocated to research projects and calls for applications. The Research Advisory Committee (RAC) undertakes the evaluation of applications and makes recommendations on funding based on independent assessments of all applications.

The Research Foundation only funds projects of excellence which use sound medical and scientific techniques and will benefit the health and well being of the Hospital's patients and the people of Tasmania.
