CALL
FOR APPLICATIONS 2008
The closing time for all applications is:
5.00pm on Friday 6 June 2008
During 2007-2008 financial year the Research Foundation is providing
a record amount of funding for local medical research. The first round
of funding advertised last year has resulted in the allocation of more
than $500,000 to local research projects and positions.
The continuing success of
the Research Foundation’s fundraising
programs has enabled the organisation to make available a second round
of funding in the first half of 2008, of up to $225,000. The funding
will be made available in the categories listed below.
Applicants need to be aware that the strong emphasis of the Research
Foundation is the support of clinician-lead research that is relevant
to the needs of the Royal Hobart Hospital and the Tasmanian community.
The Foundation expects solid outcomes from its funding, such as national
presentations, peer review publication and data that will be put towards
future external grant applications.
RHHRF funding will be awarded
objectively on the basis of the quality, feasibility and originality
of the proposed project, and its potential
contribution to clinical research and improving patient care at the Royal
Hobart Hospital and beyond. The project’s impact on the general
health and well-being of Tasmanians and their specific health challenges,
and the likelihood that the research will lead to sustainable external
grants funding will also be assessed.
THE OPPORTUNITIES
1. Additional full-time research
fellowship – up to $110,000 pa
available
Thanks to the very substantial generosity of an anonymous private donor,
the Foundation is establishing a number of new research fellowship positions
during 2008 and for the years beyond.
The fellow will either be a clinician based in the Royal Hobart Hospital
requiring more time to do research, or a post-doctoral level scientist
working on and supporting clinical research within a collaborative group
involving RHH clinicians. Applications for research within the area of
autoimmune disease would be especially welcome.
The fellowship position can be offered on a full or part-time basis,
for up to 5 years but with review at 3 years directed at assessing progress
towards obtaining external grants and salary support from bodies such
as NHMRC. Depending on the nature of the research to be undertaken, and
the availablility/establishment of appropriate support infrastructure,
the Fellow will be based at the Royal Hobart Hospital and/or the Menzies
Research Institute. As a guide to applicants, the contribution of the
Research Foundation to a full-time position will be a maximum of $110,000
p.a. GST inclusive ( ie $100K to support salary and/or infrastructure).
Appointments will be subject to the establishment of approved arrangements
with the relative employer(s).
Applicants must ensure that their proposal is in line with the Foundation’s
research emphasis as detailed above, and should provide their application
in the following format:
1. A letter of application (up to 2 x A4 pages)
2. A document detailing their research interests and the alignment of
those interests to the Foundation’s research objectives highlighted
above , emphasising the particular strengths of their research track
record, and setting out how they plan to achieve external funding during
the fellowship period
3. A copy of their curriculum vitae
2. Special cardiological equipment
grant – $100,000 available
A special bequest from the estate of the late Arthur Hewett has been
made available through the Public Trustee for the funding of this item.
Arthur left a legacy to enable the acquisition of equipment to be used
in the treatment of heart disease
Applications for this grant should be in the form of a letter to the
Foundation’s Executive Director setting out the need for the equipment
proposed to be purchased, and detailing how the equipment will improve
outcomes in research into and/ or treatment of heart disease in Tasmania.
Quotations or estimates for the equipment proposal should also be included
in the letter if possible.
3. Special grant for research into bowel cancer
Through the support of the Lions Club of Hobart Town, and the Badcock
family and their friends, the Foundation will also be providing up to
$15,000 for the Sam Badcock bowel cancer research project.
Proposals should be centred on the causes and/ or treatment of bowel
cancer.
